Stage-wise green supply chain management and environmental performance: Impact of blockchain technology

In the era of globalisation, the use of technology and concerns for sustainability is eminent in the supply chain management practices. The current study focuses on sustainable and green supply practices in different stages of supply chain management and how they can be facilitated by blockchain technology (BT). The study has addressed the existing gaps in the area namely, the lack of research assessing stage-wise green supply chain for environmental performance focusing on BT. The current study aims to assess the impact of BT on different stages of the green supply chain and a firm's environmental performance. The study also focuses on analyzing the impact of green supply chain stages on environmental performance. The study uses PLS-based structural equation modelling approach to investigate the hypothesised relationships between BT adoption and stage-wise green supply chain practices. The data was collected from individuals from medium-sized enterprises from the manufacturing industry in India. The findings reveal a positive association between blockchain adoption and green supply chain management practices leading to enhancement in environmental performance. Furthermore, the study indicates a positive relationship between blockchain integration and different stages of the green supply chain, underscoring its multi-faceted impact on environmental performance. The findings imply that the BT adoption can facilitate the realization of sustainable supply chain practices and performance improvement.

Decency or devilment: the impact of blockchain technology on product line design

ABSTRACT Blockchain is a secure database shared across a network of all participants, characterised by immutability, openness, transparency, and traceability. Therefore, blockchain technology is widely used in supply chain management, which can increase consumers' understanding of product information when goods arrive at the consumer end and increase the risk of consumer privacy information leakage. Considering a supply chain system that consists of a manufacturer and a platform, this paper studies the strategic interactions between the platform's adoption of blockchain technology and the manufacturer's product line design based on blockchain's positive and negative impacts on consumers. We examine the driving factors of the platform's use of blockchain technology, which are related to the effect of information transparency and privacy concerns caused by blockchain and the marginal production cost coefficient. In particular, a higher marginal production cost coefficient could make the platform more likely to use blockchain technology. We also find that the practice of blockchain technology may incentivize a manufacturer to extend its product line.

Business Leadership in E-Commerce in the USA: The Impact of Blockchain Technology

Due to the evolution of digital finance and the active development of cryptocurrencies, blockchain is no longer just a tool for cryptocurrency extraction or database management but a technology that has a wider range of benefits for every trader who wants to conduct transactions using electronic payment instruments (cost improvement, effective tracking and traceability, verifiable record-keeping, transparency, etc.). The impact of blockchain technology on e-commerce can be viewed through the prism of unprecedented technological capabilities, legal and regulatory issues, customer data analysis, the design of communication channels along the supply chain, and trust and security. The article investigates the effect and the direction of the impact made by changes in digital blockchain technologies on retail prices in US e-commerce during 2014-2023 based on the VECM error correction model (software package – Eviews 12). The stability of the time series of the studied variables was confirmed by the Phillips-Perron test, and the Granger causality test showed the absence of a causal relationship between the studied factors in both directions. Instead, the Johansen Juselius Joint Integration Test showed a long-term balance between the studied variables (this is what allows using the VECM model). The results of the delay test of the studied model by two criteria (AIC and SC) showed that the optimal number of delays for the studied variables is 2. When conducting validity tests of the VECM model (joint integration test, LM test, heterogeneity test, unit root test, etc.), it was found that the model does not suffer from the problem of heterogeneity or self-correlation and meets the stability conditions. The study results indicate a positive impact of changes caused by blockchain technology on e-commerce in the long run (changes in digital blockchain technology explain 44% of retail e-commerce changes), with no short-term effect. Any shock in retail e-commerce will quickly affect changes in digital blockchain technology and vice versa (from the first period).

Blockchain in banking: A comparative review of developments in the USA and Nigeria

This review paper systematically examines the adoption and impact of blockchain technology within the banking sectors of the United States of America (USA) and Nigeria, offering a comparative analysis of developments across these divergent economic and regulatory landscapes. Through an extensive literature review, the paper synthesizes findings from a range of sources, including peer-reviewed journals, industry reports, and case studies, to explore how blockchain technology is being integrated into banking operations, the challenges encountered, and the opportunities it presents in both contexts. The analysis reveals that in the USA, the integration of blockchain into banking has progressed significantly, supported by a mature technological infrastructure, a clear regulatory environment, and substantial investments in financial technology innovations. This has facilitated enhancements in transaction efficiency, security, and cost reductions. Conversely, Nigeria’s adoption of blockchain technology in banking is at a nascent stage, primarily focused on addressing financial inclusion and improving the efficiency of cross-border payments. Despite this, regulatory uncertainties and infrastructural deficits pose challenges to its broader adoption. The paper concludes that while blockchain technology offers the potential to transform banking operations globally, its adoption and impact are heavily influenced by specific national contexts. The study underscores the need for adaptive regulatory frameworks and infrastructure development to fully harness the benefits of blockchain in the banking sector. It advocates for further research into blockchain’s practical applications in banking, emphasizing the importance of cross-country studies to understand its global implications.

Effects of blockchain technology (BT) on the university librarians and libraries: a systematic literature review (SLR)

PurposeThe objectives of the study were to identify the effects of blockchain technology (BT) on the university librarians, the impact of BT on the university library services and to reveal the challenges to adopt BT in the university libraries.Design/methodology/approachA systematic literature review was applied to address the objectives of the study. Around 25 studies published in peer-reviewed journals were selected to conduct the study.FindingsThe findings of the study revealed that blockchain technology (BT) has positive effects on the university librarians as it assists them in digital resources management, provision of integrated library services, effective records management and continued professional development. The study also displayed that BT has a positive impact on the university libraries through effective information management, user privacy, collaboration, technological innovation and access control. Results also revealed that technical issues, financial constraints, security problems, skill issues and sociocultural issues created challenges to adopt BT in the university libraries.Originality/valueThe study has offered theoretical implications for future investigators through the provision of innovative literature on the prospectus and challenges associated with blockchain in the context of librarianship. The study has also provided practical implications for management bodies by offering recommendations for the successful adoption of blockchain in the university libraries. Additionally, a framework has been developed to adopt BT successfully in the university libraries for the delivery of smart library services to library patrons.

 Purpose: The aim of the study was to influence the impact of blockchain technology on supply chain management efficiency and transparency
 Methodology: This study adopted a desk methodology. A desk study research design is commonly known as secondary data collection. This is basically collecting data from existing resources preferably because of its low cost advantage as compared to a field research. Our current study looked into already published studies and reports as the data was easily accessed through online journals and libraries.
 Findings: A study on the impact of blockchain technology on supply chain management in Pakistan revealed significant improvements in efficiency and transparency. Through blockchain integration, supply chain processes experienced reduced delays and increased automation, leading to streamlined operations. Transparency was notably enhanced, with real-time tracking of goods and secure data sharing among stakeholders, mitigating risks of fraud and error. These findings suggest that adopting blockchain technology holds promise for enhancing supply chain management in Pakistan by fostering greater efficiency and transparency.
 Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Diffusion of innovations theory, information processing theory & resource dependency theory may be used to anchor future studies on the impact of block chain technology on supply chain management efficiency and transparency. Encourage supply chain stakeholders to adopt blockchain solutions for enhanced transparency, traceability, and efficiency. Advocate for regulatory frameworks that promote the adoption of blockchain technology in supply chains while addressing concerns related to data privacy, interoperability, and standardization.

Bridging the trust gap in financial reporting: the impact of blockchain technology and smart contracts

Purpose This study aims to examine the role of blockchain technology (BCT) in trust in financial reporting (TFR) and the use of smart contracts (USC). It aims to ascertain the mediating role of USC in the relationship between BCT and TFR, thereby contributing to the limited empirical literature in this domain. Design/methodology/approach Based on a sample of the accountants’ familiarity with BCT, a structural equation model was constructed and analyzed using AMOS 24. The model proposes and tests relationships between BCT, USC and TFR. Findings The study highlights BCT’s significant positive influence on TFR, with USC mediating this effect. It provides empirical evidence that supports the transformative potential of BCT and USC in enhancing TFR. Practical implications These findings have significant implications for practitioners, regulatory bodies and policymakers. By highlighting the effectiveness of BCT and USC in fostering TFR, the study makes one aware of strategies to mitigate financial malpractices. It promotes the adoption of BCT in accounting practices. Originality/value This study addresses a gap in the literature by investigating the complex interplay of BCT, USC and TFR. It offers a unique perspective by exploring the mediating role of USC, thereby enhancing our understanding of the mechanisms through which BCT can foster TFR.

Revolutionizing the restaurant industry: exploring the implementation and impact of blockchain technology on the dining experience

ABSTRACT This research conducted two studies on blockchain technology (BCT) in the restaurant supply chain. The first study explored how BCT influences customer dining experiences using a service design workshop. The second study validated the findings using PLS-SEM. Results indicate that customer innovativeness and cryptocurrency ownership positively impact transparency perceptions. Increased transparency improves food safety, quality, and naturalness perceptions, enhancing customer satisfaction and eWOM behavior. Food safety concerns and health consciousness strengthen the relationship between transparency and perceived food safety and quality. This research expands information processing theory and offers insights for restaurant owners, policymakers, and technology developers regarding BCT adoption.

Digital transformation and corporate labor investment efficiency

This study investigates whether and how digital transformation affects corporate labor investment efficiency. Based on a sample of Chinese listed firms from 2008 to 2020, this paper finds that digital transformation increases corporate labor investment efficiency. Our results still hold after using a series of robustness checks. Mechanism tests show that reducing agency problems and mitigating financing restrictions are potential channels through which digital transformation improves corporate labor investment efficiency. Further analyses reveal that digital transformation reduces both overinvestment and underinvestment in labor. Distinguishing different digital technologies, we find that artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing technology, as well as digital technology applications improve corporate labor investment efficiency, while the impact of blockchain technology is insignificant. In addition, digital transformation's positive effect on corporate labor investment efficiency is more pronounced for firms in non-labor-intensive industries, private firms, and those with more highly skilled labor. Overall, this study deepens our understanding of digital transformation's governance role in improving corporate labor investment efficiency.

Blockchain technology roles to overcome accounting, accountability and assurance barriers in supply chain finance

PurposeKnow your customer (KYC), accounting standards, issuance, clearing, and trade settlement became the major barrier to implement accounting, accountability and assurance process in supply chain finance (SCF). Blockchain technology features have the potential to solve accounting problems. This research focuses on exploring how blockchain technology provides solutions to overcome the barriers of accounting process in SCF. The benefits, opportunities, costs and risks related to blockchain adoption are also explored.Design/methodology/approachMulti-case study and qualitative methods are used with a framework based on blockchain role to overcome the accounting process barriers. Ten blockchain projects in SCF and 29 interviews of participants as a unit of analysis are considered.FindingsThe findings indicate that blockchain technology offers solutions to solve accounting, accountability and assurance problems in SCF. Validity, verification, smart contracts, automation and enduring data on trade transactions potentially solve those barriers. However, it is also necessary to consider costs such as implementation, technology, education and integration costs. Then there are possible risks such as regulatory compliance, operational, code development and scalability risk. This finding reflects the current status of blockchain technology roles in SCF.Research limitations/implicationsThis study unveils blockchain's SCF accounting potential, emphasizing multi-case method limitations and future research prospects. Diverse contexts challenge findings' applicability, warranting cross-industry studies for deeper insights. Addressing selection bias and integrating quantitative measures can enhance understanding of blockchain's accounting impact.Practical implicationsAccounting professionals can get an idea of the future direction and impact of blockchain technology on accounting, accountability and assurance processes.Originality/valueThis study provides initial findings on the potential, costs and risks of blockchain that is beneficial for parties involved in SCF, especially for banks and insurance underwriters. In addition, the findings also provide direction for the contribution of blockchain technology to accounting theory in the future.

The impact of blockchain technology on customer attitude and behavioral intentions in the banking sector

This study examines customer attitudes towards blockchain technology (BCT)-supported banking applications in Oman and explores the relationship between these attitudes and behavioral intentions, highlighting the influencing factors. Blockchain Technology (BCT) has disrupted the banking sector, but understanding customer attitudes towards BCT-supported banking applications and their impact on behavior remains limited. In pursuit of this objective, a quantitative research design was employed, involving the collection of data from retail bank customers in Oman through a structured questionnaire. The collected data underwent rigorous analysis using a robust Structural Equation Model, confirming the constructs' validity, reliability, and distinctiveness. The study uncovered that BCT has a positive impact on various aspects of the banking sector, including customer service quality, regulatory compliance, secured transactions, and cost reduction. By augmenting transparency, efficiency, and trust in banking transactions, BCT significantly improves customer attitudes towards BCT-supported banks. Furthermore, the research reveals that positive attitudes play a pivotal role in influencing customers' intentions to prefer and continue using these blockchain-backed banks. The study also highlights the importance of trust factors and transaction frequency as moderators in shaping customer attitudes and behavioral intentions in this context. The insights gleaned from this research hold practical significance for banks operating in Oman, offering guidance for tailored marketing campaigns, product design, and aligning their offerings with customer expectations in the realm of blockchain-supported banking applications. Additionally, the study provides practical recommendations for the successful implementation and adoption of blockchain-supported financial applications within the banking sector.

Block by block: a bibliometric analysis of blockchain in real estate

Blockchain technology is a novel and disruptive innovation that has the potential to transform various industries, such as finance, supply chain, and healthcare. However, the application and impact of blockchain technology in real estate remain largely unexplored. This study aims to investigate the characteristics, development, and structure of the research field of blockchain in real estate using bibliometric analysis. The study analyzes 352 publications indexed by the Web of Science database from 2016 to 2022 using different methods and tools, such as descriptive statistics, network analysis, co-citation analysis, and co-word analysis. The results show that blockchain in real estate is an interdisciplinary and rapidly growing research area that covers various topics and applications. The study also identifies the most influential publications, authors, journals, and countries in this field, as well as the main research themes and gaps. The study discusses the implications and contributions of the bibliometric analysis of the blockchain in real estate research and practice and suggests directions for future research on this topic.

In 2021, online marketplaces such as Nifty and Opensea gained popularity, and digital art creations, including Beeple’s pieces, made headlines worldwide. This attracted traditional fine art practitioners, artists, dealers, digital content creators, and crypto entrepreneurs who wanted to participate in this trend. Several significant investment and token-funded projects took place in Asia, fueling high hopes of revolutionizing the art market with nonfungible token (NFT) technology. However, the numbers suggest a different story, as NFT transactions have reached a historical low. Critics from both sides challenge the value of NFTs, and there is minimal empirical research on the topic of blockchain technologies in the art market. This paper explores the challenges and misunderstandings in the art market through the lens of the researcher’s insight as an art tech entrepreneur. Its aim is to provide an explorative account of the use cases of NFT and blockchain technology vis-a-vis the traditional art market. The paper discusses the current work in progress at the Art ID Standard consortium, covering decentralized identity, blockchain, and use cases, and provides insights into the implications of these challenges for artists, collectors, and the broader art ecosystem.

Financing strategy of the capital-constrained supply chain under uncertainty: the impact of blockchain technology on the credit period

PurposeThis paper explores the effectiveness of using blockchain technology to solve financial constraints faced by small- and medium-sized suppliers in a capital-constrained supply chain.Design/methodology/approachTo characterize the impact of blockchain on credit period and enterprise credit level, the study formulates a newsvendor model to analyze a supply chain in which a financially constrained supplier sells products to a financially sound manufacturer, subject to uncertain demand. The study investigates three repayment methods: the benchmark case without blockchain and two blockchain-enabled cases with the hybrid repayment mode and single repayment mode (SRM), respectively. The study derives and compares the equilibria under each repayment method to characterize their impact.FindingsWhen the bank interest rate is low and the carbon cap is also low, choosing to implement blockchain technology leads to higher profitability for the manufacturer than not utilizing it. Within the framework of blockchain technology, when comparing the two repayment models, the manufacturer exhibits a preference for SRM. Furthermore, under specific conditions of the bank interest rate, blockchain technology can effectively facilitate consensus among supply chain members in terms of channel selection.Practical implicationsThe results derived in this paper provide novel managerial implications to the capital-constrained members in terms of pricing decisions and order quantity under demand uncertainty considering blockchain technology, which transfers the creditor's rights to the bank and shortens the collection time. In addition, blockchain technology enables efficient and intelligent collaborative development of supply chains, which can reduce carbon emissions during the transportation of goods.Originality/valueFew studies incorporate blockchain technology into supply chain finance, and this paper considers the credit period and capital's time value for a capital-constrained supplier facing the adoption of blockchain technology within a stochastic demand environment.

Exploring Factors and Impact of Blockchain Technology in the Food Supply Chains: An Exploratory Study.

Blockchain technology (BCT) has been proven to have the potential to transform food supply chains (FSCs) based on its potential benefits. BCT promises to improve food supply chain processes. Despite its several benefits, little is known about the factors that drive blockchain adoption within the food supply chain and the impact of blockchain technology on the food supply chain, as empirical evidence is scarce. This study, therefore, explores factors, impacts and challenges of blockchain adoption in the FSC. The study adopts an exploratory qualitative interview approach. The data consist of Twenty-one interviews which were analyzed using thematic analysis techniques in NVivo (v12), resulting in identifying nine factors classified under three broad categories (Technology-complexity, compatibility, cost; Organization-organization size, knowledge; Environment-government support, competitive pressure, standardization, and compliance) as the most significant factors driving blockchain adoption in the FSC. In addition, five impacts were identified (visibility, performance, efficiency, trust, and value creation) to blockchain technology adoption. This study also identifies significant challenges of blockchain technology (interoperability, privacy, infrastructure conditions, and lack of knowledge). Based on the findings, the study developed a conceptual framework for blockchain adoption in food supply chains. The study adds to the corpus of knowledge by illuminating the adoption of blockchain technology and its effects on food supply chains and by giving the industry evidence-based guidance for developing its blockchain plans. The study provides full insights and awareness of blockchain adoption challenges among executives, supply chain organizations, and governmental agencies.

The impact of blockchain technology on the online purchase behavior of green agricultural products

The purpose of this study is to identify and investigate the types of trust and their impact mechanisms in the application of blockchain technology for green agricultural products. A mixed research approach was used in this study. First, qualitative in-depth interviews with consumers were conducted to identify the technological path (blockchain technology), and the information disclosure path (environmental information of green agricultural products) that affect consumer trust. Two types of consumer trust were also identified, namely, cognitive trust in blockchain technology (digital trust), and instantaneous trust in blockchain technology disclosure information (swift trust), both of which play a role in influencing consumers’ immediate purchase. Then, based on the interview results, a theoretical model for this study was developed by combining signal theory and trust transfer theory. Through a quantitative survey, 474 valid data were collected to empirically examine the role of consumer blockchain technology experience and environmental information transparency perceived on digital trust and swift trust, and the role of both types of trust on impulse buying. The results show that consumer blockchain technology experience can significantly and positively affect the environmental information transparency perceived. And both have a positive effect on digital trust and swift trust. Also both trusts have a significant effect on impulse buying. Further mediating effects confirm the environmental information transparency perceived as an important intrinsic mechanism by which the blockchain technology experience influences consumer trust. The results of this study add an empirical basis for the role of blockchain technology. It also provides a reference for technology adoption by related companies.

Potential of the Crypto Economy in Financial Management and Fundraising for Tourism

This study aims to examine the potential of blockchain technology in the financing and financial management of entrepreneurial tourism projects. It highlights two objectives: how the technology can be used as an alternative financing tool and how it can improve efficiency and transparency in the financial management of tourism companies. This study shows that initial coin offerings are an effective way to finance innovative tourism projects and that blockchain technology can improve the competitiveness and efficiency of tourism companies. Due to the lack of empirical data on the actual implementation and impact of blockchain technology in the tourism industry, it is suggested that further research is needed to examine the practical application of blockchain technology in the tourism industry, its potential impact on tourism businesses and its implications for the regulatory framework. The proposed methodology includes a systematic literature review on the application of blockchain technology for the financing of tourism projects and the financial improvement of tourism business models. The results indicate that blockchain technology has the potential to transform the financing and financial management of the tourism industry and improve its efficiency and transparency. Furthermore, combining blockchain with other technologies can provide additional benefits in supply chain management and event automation.
